Puppy Dog Rabies Shots include a complete physical pet exam.
Hi. I’m Dr. Stram from Elk Grove Pet Clinic. I want talk to you about the importance of infant canine vaccinations. When you acquire a pup from a breeder or a pet store, it’s very important that you try to get the pup to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Additionally, if you do not intend to breed your dog, please spay neuter.
We do a complete physical infant canine exam in order to make sure that there aren’t any congenital defects, heart murmurs, hernias, or anything else that might be an issue with your new pup that could lead to long-term health complications.
Puppy Dog Rabies Shots are usually overdue.
If everything is healthy, then we try to carry on the vaccinations that have already been started by the breeder or store. Everybody has their own idea on what a vaccination schedule is. Pet stores are notorious for putting off the vaccinations as long as possible so that they don’t have to bear that expense. Many times when we see a patient from a pet store, the patient is almost immediately due for vaccinations because these vaccinations have been put off.
Most breeders will vaccinate pups at around 6, 7, or 8 weeks of age in order to get the initial “set-in” before the pup goes to a home or to a store. At that point, we try to follow up from that point on. Typically, we like to give these pups their vaccinations at about 6, 8, 10, 12, and 16 weeks of age.
Evaluation involves looking at when the first or second vaccination set was given. Sometimes (if the pup was at the store for a long time) the pup may have had a third or a fourth set. We try to evaluate where we are with regards to the vaccination series. We then try to get the pup caught up or give the final vaccinations.
Puppy Dog Rabies Shots include other important vaccinations.
We give the distemper parvo series in order to prevent the common diseases that we see. We also see diseases that are not so common.
We’ll see lyme disease. Lyme disease is a disease that is carried by ticks. This disease can be fatal to canines. If your dog is going to be around the woods or a forest preserve or Michigan or Wisconsin etc., then we might recommend giving the lyme disease prevention series to your pup. This is because we want to try to prevent them from getting lyme disease.
Kennel cough is a vaccine that we can give. This is optional, but we highly recommend it for dogs that are going to be going to a boarding facility or if they are going to a grooming facility.
Rabies vaccines are required by law. We usually give rabies shots to canines at around the age of 16 weeks.
We try to see where your new pup fits in best according to where the patient is at in it’s vaccination schedule and according to what we need to do in order to “catch up” the patient (or finalize) with regards to the vaccines. We do this in order to make sure that your dog is vaccinated completely. This gives the animal its best chance of fighting off any diseases that the animal is exposed to.

Puppy Dog Rabies shots are required by law. If your dog even breaks the skin, you can have much bigger legal problems if your dog does not have current vaccinations.
