Pet Medications Purchased Online May Not Be Guaranteed.
While it may be labeled as an “online pharmacy,” please be aware that most online pet pharmacies are not backed/guaranteed by the manufacturers of the products they are selling. Manufacturers of veterinary drugs do not sell directly to outside internet pharmacies, meaning they obtain these medications through third party vendors. This means that the shipping, storage, expiration and in some cases true medication doses are not regulated.
Pet Medications Purchased Online May Be Shipped Improperly.
The shipment of drugs through the mail and parcel post is often a concern for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. This is almost all pet medications. Uncontrolled shipping conditions can include high and low temperatures outside of the listed storage conditions for a drug. For example, the US FDA found the temperature in a mail box in the sun could reach 136 °F while the ambient air temperature was 101 °F.
Shipment by express mail and couriers reduces transit time and often involves delivery to the door, rather than a mail box. The use of insulated shipping containers also helps control drug temperatures, reducing risks to drug safety and efficacy.

Conventional stationary pharmacies, like Elk Grove Pet Clinic have a controlled distribution system from the manufacturer. Validation and good distribution practices are followed. There are few online pharmacies that are authorized to sell with the manufacturer’s approval
Prescription Requests From An “Online Pharmacy” Policy Update
We will no longer grant permission via phone or fax of prescription request from outside pharmacies with the exception of compounding of some prescription medications. It is the policy of Elk Grove Pet Clinic that a written prescription will be provided directly to clients with a current patient relationship with the clinic (examination within the past 12 months) upon request.
